Shadowlands Ranch is a private wild horse sanctuary. It comprises 1100 acres of open prairie grassland, as well a pocket of forest where ponderosa and pinon pine trees create plenty of shade and shelter for the horses. It is surrounded with beautiful views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the surrounding rolling grasslands of Watrous. When mother nature is good to New Mexico, there are rain-fed ponds where the mustangs come to drink and swim.

The goals of this sanctuary include providing “a wild land reserve for displaced, un-adoptable and rejected wild horses whose only other alternatives would be a lifetime of confinement or perhaps even slaughter.”  A good number of the horses have been adopted from both BLM and USFS holding pens. At this time there are about 30 horses at the Shadowland Ranch location. The ranch and surrounding areas also provide habitat to herds of elk, pronghorn, coyotes and mountain lions.

This is a great workshop for photographers of all levels. If you are new to photographing horses, you will appreciate the slower pace of this workshop. Experienced photographers will love this location for the stunning beauty of the horses and landscape, and the opportunity for close-ups and behavioral shots.
